National Attention has Proven a Good Thing for the Free College Tuition Movement

 

As Democratic presidential hopefuls gathered across the country this summer and fall, the question of a national free college tuition program was debated early and often. The result was a strengthening of majority support among all ages, races, genders and most importantly, across the political spectrum. CFCT’s most recent polling also shows a consensus that students from various backgrounds, including adults, should benefit from such programs.

The Campaign for Free College Tuition in partnership with PSB Research recently surveyed 1901 Americans – including 1146 self-identified Democrats and individuals who lean Democrat. The survey was fielded June 7-13, 2019. PSB weighed the overall sample to US Census for age, gender, and ethnicity. Key findings of interest can be found below.

In July, we reported that support for free college tuition for all those who are academically qualified was “remarkably stable,” despite the political turmoil the country has been experiencing at the national level.” Our November 2018 survey conducted right after Election Day not only confirms these findings, it indicates that overall support has grown and solidified.

Free College Tuition is one of Top Three Priorities for State Revenues Among All Voters

When it comes to supporting or opposing government policies the mantra of follow the money becomes clear. People reveal their priorities when they tell their governments how to spend their hard earned tax contributions.

Recently, the Campaign for Free College Tuition and PSB Research asked Americans to prioritize how their state tax dollars should be spent. Americans have a strong and consistent message to their state governments – make sure healthcare is available and make sure young Americans have the opportunity to get the education needed to be successful. In recent months we saw Americans rally on the healthcare issue. Now it appears the prospect of making 2 and 4 year colleges’ tuition free might just be the next government priority rallying cry.

Support for Free College Tuition Continues to Rise

State Programs Preferred by Most

 

A poll conducted earlier this month by PSB Research on behalf of the Campaign for Free College Tuition (CFCT) showed another significant jump in support for free college tuition programs for students who are academically qualified.  Strong Support for state programs rose to a high-water mark of 47% -- up 12% since CFCT started national polling in December 2016.  Combining results from those who Strongly or Somewhat support the idea, 78% of the public now approves of the idea of free college tuition, also the highest level since CFCT polling began.
