In one of the most fractious and turbulent moments in America’s history, few issues inspire support across ideological and generational lines. But, as new nationwide polling shows, publicly funded free college tuition is one of those rare proposals that unites Americans — and retains that support.
National polling conducted in February by PSB Research for the Campaign for Free College Tuition reveals that fully 8 in 10 Americans (81%) want their state to provide free tuition to public colleges and universities to any academically qualified student.

Free College Tuition is one of Top Three Priorities for State Revenues Among All Voters
When it comes to supporting or opposing government policies the mantra of follow the money becomes clear. People reveal their priorities when they tell their governments how to spend their hard earned tax contributions.
Recently, the Campaign for Free College Tuition and PSB Research asked Americans to prioritize how their state tax dollars should be spent. Americans have a strong and consistent message to their state governments – make sure healthcare is available and make sure young Americans have the opportunity to get the education needed to be successful. In recent months we saw Americans rally on the healthcare issue. Now it appears the prospect of making 2 and 4 year colleges’ tuition free might just be the next government priority rallying cry.

Support for Free College Tuition Continues to Rise
State Programs Preferred by Most
A poll conducted earlier this month by PSB Research on behalf of the Campaign for Free College Tuition (CFCT) showed another significant jump in support for free college tuition programs for students who are academically qualified. Strong Support for state programs rose to a high-water mark of 47% -- up 12% since CFCT started national polling in December 2016. Combining results from those who Strongly or Somewhat support the idea, 78% of the public now approves of the idea of free college tuition, also the highest level since CFCT polling began.

The latest results from the Campaign for Free College Tuition’s exclusive quarterly survey of national attitudes are in! The headline: Strong support for free college tuition continues to grow. In three surveys, starting shortly after the 2016 election and as late as August of this year, 800 - 1000 adult Americans were asked if they strongly supported, somewhat supported, somewhat opposed, or strongly opposed the idea of state providing free tuition at their colleges or universities for anyone who was academically qualified. The percentage indicating their strong support for the idea has now risen to 41% of the entire population, up from 35% when the survey was first conducted.

Bipartisan. Seems almost like a quaint harkening to a prior time. Like drying clothes on the line or having an operator assist in making a long distance phone call.
In an era in which we constantly focus on that which separates us along political lines, there appears to be at least one issue that brings back the true meaning of the word bipartisan: free college.

The idea of free public college tuition is supported by a majority of voters in both parties. According to a new national survey conducted for the Campaign for Free College Tuition by Penn Schoen and Berland, not only do 89% of Hillary Clinton voters support the concept, but so do 54% of those who voted for Donald Trump in the last election. In states that were colored red on the 2016 electoral college map, state-level programs that make college tuition free enjoyed 69% support; blue state support was 78%.

Overall support for providing free tuition at public universities or colleges for anyone who is academically qualified is 73 percent.

Polling conducted by Penn Schoen Berland on behalf of the Campaign for Free College Tuition (CFCT) indicates that nearly two-thirds of Americans (63%) support making college tuition free. While the concept of free college tuition had support across all racial/ethnic subgroups, it was highest among African-American (85%) and Hispanic (67%) respondents.
